In the first part of the Green Series, we talked about how Pasadena homeowners can help the environment and save money by looking at the Lighting and Electronics in their house.
Today, we’ll focus on your home’s Heating and Insulation.
- Summer is almost over, but living in Pasadena, we can still expect to see some hot days over the next month or so. Adjust your air-conditioning thermostat to 78°F or higher, health permitting.
- During the winter, set the heating thermostat to 68°F when you are at home and lower when you are away. Adjust your layers of clothing before adjusting the thermostat!
Lowering the temperature 5ºF to 10ºF can save you up to 20% on heating costs.
- Replace or clean furnace filters regularly and get a furnace tune-up. Keeping your furnace clean, lubricated and properly adjusted can help you save on heating costs and will extend the life of the furnace.
- Weather-strip, seal and caulk leaky doors and windows and install foam gaskets behind outlet and switch covers.
- Use sunlight wisely. During the heating season, leave shades and blinds open on sunny days, but close them at night to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows. Close shades and blinds during the summer.
Tomorrow we will focus on the steps Pasadena home residents can take with their appliances.
