The 2011 Pasadena Showcase house is an English Country Manor in La Canada Flintridge.
Day 335 of 365 Things To Do in Pasadena invites you to tour a magnificent home embellished by talented designers showcasing their latest unique creations.
About Showcase House:
An all-volunteer organization, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is a non-profit California Corporation whose members donate their time and talents to produce the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Founded in 1948, and formerly known as The Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee, they adopted the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as their annual benefit in 1965. It is one of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the nation.
But corporate facts don’t begin to give one a clear picture. About seventy women with a myriad of backgrounds accomplish the Herculean feat of producing the Showcase House. Many work fulltime at this “job” and they set the gold standard for volunteerism. Their commitment is legendary in the community. The organization is also strongly supported by about 200 Intermediate and Associate members who provide financial support and volunteer their time at the Showcase House. –Information provided by PasadenaShowcase.org
About the Architect:
Renowned architect, Paul Revere Williams designed this English country Manor in 1927. Williams borrowed ideas from the past without using excessive ornamentation and, according to one critic: he was “the last work in elegant traditionalism.” This revered residence remains a celebrated illustration of English Period Revival at its best.
Paul R. Williams, an African-American, became renowned for designing major buildings such as the Federal Office Building, LA County Courthouse, Union Station, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Beverly Hills Hotel and over 2,000 homes in Southern California. He was known as the “architect to the stars” and designed homes for Cary Grant, Groucho Marx, Lauren Bacall, Lucille Ball, Frank Sinatra, Danny Thomas, Humphrey Bogart, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Tyrone Powers and dozens more.
