A few months ago, a new Korean Restaurant opened it’s doors in Pasadena. Many will recognize the location of Masa which served up pretty good Japanese cuisine. Now… the new owners are hoping to make this the Korean BBQ of choice in the area and as their menu says “Happy life comes from healthy food – eat healthy, live healthy!”
Lunch specials are priced from $8 to $10 and include beef broth, rice and house salad. Lunch is served from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. You have a choice of spicy stews, kalbi beef, thin sliced rib ye, black cod and vegetable dishes on a sizzling stone pot.
Dinner entrees start at $9, but average closer to $15. Dinners are served with beef broth and a mix of appetizers. The appetizers were all very interesting and if you like spicy food, you’re definitely in the right place. I also loved the light beef broth… it hit just the right spot!
I love Kalbi beef and was excited to try it along with some of the other exotic offerings. They had steak tartare on the menu, so we decided to give that a try as well as broiled thin sliced beef rib eye. Personally, I would not order tartare again. It was interesting, but to sweet for my taste. The kalbi was very tasty and was served with perfectly cooked potato slices. The rib eye looked different from what I’d expect to see, but was extremely flavorful. Both dishes were served with an egg omelet type of side dish that just melted in my mouth.
For dessert, the server brought out a pumpkin rice drink. Different, but very pleasant!
So for a different experience and a fresh twist on the Korean cuisine, give Gaon a try. I understand that they will be adding table grills within the next few weeks for a more authentic experience!
