Academy Cinema in Pasadena is located on Colorado Blvd on the corner of Catalina. In 1939, the building housed Fox Theatre designed by L.A. Smith. L.A. Smith also designed Rialto in South Pasadena. Today, Academy Cinema offers the most affordable movie experience in town.
The original theater was remodeled in 1957 and LA Times article dated December 15, 1957 states (thanks to Ken MC for the info):
Newly renovated Fox West Coast Theaters’ Academy theater and building in Pasadena will be reopened next Thursday. Modernization project, which cost $192,000, includes relocation of building entrance from Catalina Street to Colorado Blvd., installation of elevator to second floor offices, renovation of facade and installation of aluminum store fronts. The theater tower was remodeled and the marquee was repainted and relighted.
Regency Theatres took over the cinema (I believe in the 90s, but can’t confirm that) and is now offering unbelievable deals for your movie nights.
The price of admission is $2 per person before 6 pm and only $3 per person after 6 pm.
Wednesday night is Date Night Special! Movies starting at 6 PM and later are only $10 for both and include 2 popcorns and 2 sodas. Yes… 2 admissions, popcorn and soda!
The movies that are played are not brand new releases. However, they’re not outdated. Most movies have been out for a few weeks or so… Just to give you an example… they’re currently playing Hot Tub Time Machine, The Ghost Writer and Babies and 6 others.
So… if you are looking for an affordable night out, try Academy Cinemas. To the movies we go for day 17 of 365 Things To Do in Pasadena™.
