DAY 158: Equator Cafe

Day 158 of 365 Things To Do In Pasadena brings us to trendy cafe situated in one of the many historical alleys in Pasadena.

Equator Cafe in Old Town Pasadena

It had been a while since I’d been at this eclectic café on Mills Alley in Old Town Pasadena.  Last time I was there, about 3 years ago, it was a cool, eclectic Internet café serving coffee, teas, hot chocolate and pastries and sometimes featuring some local music.  In the evenings guests could be seen relaxing on the outdoor patio smoking hookahs, lounging on one of the cushy couches inside or surfing the net.  With high, exposed beamed ceilings, brick walls and simple stained concrete floors, it had a very urban, trendy feel.

Well it certainly has changed and in my opinion for the better.  All grown up Equator is now an Asian Fusion Restaurant and Cafe.

The exposed beamed ceilings, brick walls and flooring remain.  However the urban look has been modernized and it now has more of a chic, zen-ish feel.  Upon entering their beautiful wrought iron adorned double doors, a huge Buddha head welcomes you in.  The big fluffy couches still beckon you to sit and unwind.  They’re now accompanied by dining tables to accommodate guests enjoying the full, Asian-infused menu.  A full bar serves café type faire along with beer, wine and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.   Large Buddahs and Asian accents hang on the brick walls creating an environment that perpetuates relaxation.  Even the bathroom has a gorgeous chandelier, vessel sink and magazine rack.

I was there mid-morning meeting with a business associate to talk over coffee.  We were looking for a quiet place with some privacy and one of their corner couches offered exactly that.  I’m anxious to go back for the dining experience.  My mouth watered as I checked out their lunch and dinner menu that includes Honey Glazed Shrimp with Walnuts (one of my favorites), Trio Mushroom Angel Hair Pasta, Sesame Encrusted Salmon and Beef Mignon Cubes not to mention Dim Sum and a fine desert selection.

They’ve got Happy Hour specials running every day from half price appetizers and mixed drinks on Mondays to Bottomless Brunch Specials on the Weekends.  So next time you’re in the mood for a more chic, edgy, atmosphere, try Equator Restaurant and Café.  Even their website will help you loosen up.  Check it out at http://www.equatorcafe.com/flash.html.
