We thought it would be fun for us to use day 196 of 365 Things To Do in Pasadena to peer into some not so famous Thanksgiving traditions.
We know that Thanksgiving is a holiday that originated here in America with the Pilgrims celebrating a bountiful harvest with the Native Americans in The New World.
Since then, the American tradition has been to gather around the dinner table with our loved ones and enjoy a feast of plenty. The most common items laid out amongst the cornucopia of food is a Turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, vegetables, biscuits, cranberry sauce, and of course pumpkin pie.
In more recent years, the latest holiday fad, has been to deep fry your turkey, have a fo-turkey (turkey made of To-Fu), or try your hand at making Turducken; which has become the phenomenon of deep frying or roasting a Turkey, stuffed with Chicken, stuffed with a duck! Of course you can always go the Jones Soda way of enjoying your Thanksgiving dinner and swallow your whole meal without ever chewing.
Yes, the popular soda makers come out with a new Holiday selection of sodas each year. They have released flavors such as mashed potatoes & gravy, Turkey & Gravy dinner, and green bean casserole, just to name a few. This year, I believe they are all about the bacon. Jones is offering you 2 bacon flavored sodas, bacon flavored lip balm, bacon & Cheddar popcorn and a bacon gravy kit for $9.99 + shipping. Oh how the holidays have changed!
Here is a look at other ways the commemoration of the harvest has been celebrated in other cultures.
The Romans celebrated a harvest festival called Cerelia, which honored Ceres, the goddess of corn, also from which the word cereal is derived. During this festival, the first fruits were offered to the goddess Ceres and the celebration included festivals, parades, and games.
In the Jewish Culture Sukkot is celebrated. To be brief, this marks the end of the agricultural year and coincides with the final harvest before the onset of winter. There is much involved with the celebration of Sukkot that dates back to the days of when of the Jewish people wandered the desert for 40 years.
