I had the honor and pleasure to meet the amazing staff, board members and supporters of a wonderful organization called Asian Youth Center (AYC) at their Community Benefit Mixer. AYC is a non-for-profit organization with a mission to provide social services and service educational needs of all youth and families, with a focus on Asian Immigrants. It was founded in 1989 and since it began AYC has been an important community hub where youth is supported to grow up in a safe, healthy and productive environment and continuously contribute to and celebrate the diversity of the San Gabriel Valley area.
I sat down with AYC’s Development Manager, Mr. Kevin Lian to learn a bit more about the organization and how the community can get involved and take part in all the fantastic programs that AYC offers. Mr. Lian’s primary focus is to continuously raise awareness for AYC through marketing and special events and is also responsible for the fundraising activities and public relations.

Kevin, thank you for taking the time to speak with Pasadena Views Real Estate Team. Please tell us a little bit more about AYC and it’s history:
AYC was founded in 1989 and it was co-founded by our late founder and Executive Director of 20 years, her name is May To. May together with other community activist leaders in the city of Monterey Park got together and saw a need for the Asian Youth Center and the services that it provided to be here in the San Gabriel Valley.
Why did AYC decide to be based in the City of San Gabriel?
The City of San Gabriel is a wonderful city to live in and to work in. Personally, I live in the City of San Gabriel myself and we have a great relationship with the City Hall, the City Government and local businesses. We moved to the City of San Gabriel in 1997 and since then it’s been a blast for us. We have a lot of diversity and we’re very close to many different communities.
Tell us more about your very popular After School Program.
It’s called ACE and it stands for Accelerated Children’s Education. After school, throughout the year, students grades 1-8 come to our youth center and they finish their homework here, we help them with all subjects and also it’s a great place for the kids not only to learn academically but also to be exposed to different views, cultures, different people and it is one of our longest running programs at the Asian Youth Center.
How can the local community get involved?
There are many ways that people can help out with our After-School program. For one thing, you can help by sharing this message and sharing that we do have an after-school program here in the City of San Gabriel. It’s a very affordable place and we have very high quality tutors and curriculum here. The second way to help with AYC and our after-school program is by participating in our events. Throughout the year we have different community events that we host.
Where can we find AYC?
We’re located centrally right off of Del Mar Blvd and Broadway (100 West Clary Avenue, San Gabriel, CA 91776) and we would love to show you around and volunteers are also very welcome here. As a volunteer you can help tutor the kids and help our staff. So, anytime that you are in the City of San Gabriel please do stop by!
