Day 258 of 365 Things To Do In Pasadena takes us to Burger Continental on Lake Avenue. You’d think that Burger Continental would serve burgers. However, the name is very misleading. Yes… burgers are definitely on the menu, but Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine truly takes over.
Interestingly enough, I’ve been walking or driving by this restaurant for years, but never tried it until today. I have to say it was a very interesting experience.
We parked at the Shops on Lake, Macy’s parking lot since we were going to hit the store later and walked South towards California Blvd to the restaurant. Several outside tables were available to choose from since we got there for a very late lunch – around 3 pm. Sunday brunch was winding down – $18.95 per person with champagne, chocolate covered strawberries and other goodies which I spied through the open doorway.
As we set down, we met Andre who was serving us and who turned out to be the original founder/owner of the place. He now comes to help out and talk to his many customer friends. Andre is an Armenian from Cypress which explains the menu!
Lesson One – if you are lucky enough to have Andre serve you, do not ask too many questions about the menu. Andre’s answer is to bring tons of food for you to try. We asked about the soup of the day and immediately had 2 bowls of soup placed in front of us. This was followed by two plates of Greek appetizers – as Andre said – just try them – you’ll love them. He was right!
Lesson Two – the portions are tremendous and the prices are reasonable. My son ordered a Philly sandwich. It was open faced with mushrooms and thin stripes of meat covered with a ton of cheese. He was in cheese heaven. However he said the steak was not marinated enough for him and a bit on the dry side. He was happy to overlook it though. My husband was courageous and ordered spicy Armenian frog legs (don’t ask!) for an appetizer which surprisingly he loved and took left overs home. I had their marinated chicken pita pocket sandwich with veggies. Again, a huge dish… a bit too greasy for me, but I can see folks really liking it.
All you can eat lunch buffet is served daily until 3 pm for only $8.95. Live entertainment including belly dancers is available in the evenings. You’ll need to check Burger Continental’s website for show times.
