You might have come across someone talking about Hastings Ranch and if even if you’re a local, not realized that it’s actually a neighborhood in Pasadena. Hastings Ranch is very popular among home buyers as it offers a good selection of shopping, restaurants, popular grocery stores, close proximity to the hiking trails and is home to some spectacular holiday light displays.
History
The history of Hastings Ranch dates back to 1882 when Charles Cook Hastings purchased 1,100 acres of land between Pasadena and Sierra Madre for $7 per acre. The land was used to plant grape vines at first. However, when Charles Houston Hastings took over after his father passed away, the land became home to unusual specimens of plants, peacocks, pheasants, cats, dogs and champion horses. Residents of the east Pasadena and Arcadia areas can still come across peacocks roaming around in the streets or see them relaxing on their roof (peacocks were also brought in by Lucky Baldwin in 1875). When Hastings Ranch was sold off in 1942 the land was subdivided into luxury housing tracts. The famous architect Edward H. Fickett was brought in to lead the design of the residential area and more than 1,800 homes were completed by 1951. Today the neighborhood is divided into Upper and Lower Hastings Ranch.
