I first wrote about Oba Sushi in 2008 a few weeks after they opened on Glenarm in Pasadena. I stopped by to meet Kunche and Alvie, proud owners of Oba, who were so excited about the restaurant, both from the menu and design perspective. Kunche’s goal has been to provide the freshest food with the best dining experience… to create a consumer driven restaurant!
I want to please my customers. After being on the floor for so many years, I understand the needs and wants of consumers – says Kunche.
Oba Sushi Izakaya has survived and flourished in the last 3 years. Every time I drive by, the parking lot is filled with cars and the restaurant is filled to the brim. The restaurant is very comfortable and inviting and featuring sleek, modern lines with a calm grey color throughout designed by Skyler Kogachi at Schism Design. There are many windows making it a very enjoyable space to relax in. Service is friendly and the wait staff is attentive.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been there so hubby and I decided to stop by for dinner. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered the sushi combo plate. I have to say I was surprised with how much we got for $15. It comes with a salad – very fresh – perfect starter, your choice of either a California Roll or Spicy Tuna Roll and a variety of sushi. We both opted for the Spicy Tuna.
The roll was perfect – beautifully cut, small bites and very tasty. The rest of the sushi – shrimp, yellow tail, tuna, salmon and other morsels were extremely fresh. Perfect amount of food for a great price.
I ordered green tea which was brewed to perfection and steaming hot! Victor ordered beer which was served perfectly chilled.
Happy hour is available Monday through Friday 5:30 pm to 7 pm.
